Target’s Retail Accelerator in partnership with Techstars will return for a fourth year in 2019 – this time with a twist. The new iteration will be an international program held in partnership with Germany-based METRO, one of the world’s leading wholesalers, and will include startups from around the world.

The 14-week program kicks off in May 2019. All participating startups will spend the first 3 weeks in Berlin, Germany meeting with METRO leaders and learning about the European retail market. The following 2 weeks will be spent in Minneapolis meeting with Target leaders. The next 6 weeks, startups will have the opportunity to work from either Minneapolis or Berlin, depending on business development opportunities.

Then, in August 2019, the final 2 weeks will be spent in Minneapolis preparing for Demo Day where each startup will showcase their progress to investors and leaders from Target and METRO. Click here for more info on the Target + METRO accelerator, certified by Techstars.

What are the differences between Target + METRO accelerator, certified by Techstars and the other Target accelerator programs?

Each of our programs has unique characteristics and evolve from cohort to cohort. Generally speaking:

  • Target + METRO accelerator, certified by Techstars will be an international program held in partnership with Germany-based METRO, one of the world’s leading wholesalers, and will include startups from around the world. This 14 week program will support retail-focused tech startups that could benefit guests.
  • Target Takeoff focuses on consumer products and is a shorter time period comprised of in-person and virtual experiences. Takeoff is centered around emerging startups focused on specific topics that support Target’s strategic priorities.
  • Our India Accelerator program focuses on Bangalore-based startups that are creating and refining technologies to benefit all enterprise operations, both front and back-end.
Will we work from Germany and the US?

All participating startups will spend the first 3 weeks in Germany meeting with METRO leaders and learning about the European retail market. The following 3 weeks will be spent in Minneapolis meeting with Target leaders. During the middle 4/5 weeks, startups will have the option to work from either Minneapolis or Berlin, depending on business development opportunities.

Is Target/METRO/Techstars investing in the participating startups?

Each participating startup will receive $120k in investment (split equally between Target and METRO) in the form of a convertible note.
